Meeting with Jo Swinston

12/10/2011

During October, I was lucky to meet up with Lib Dem MP Jo Swiston. I wanted to meet with her to talk about the lack on women in the games industry (a topic I wrote my degree dissertation on.)

Jo Swinston is also a co-founder of The Campaign for Body Confidence, an organisation that is passionate about everyone feeling happy in their own skin. “We believe that the pressure to conform to impossible stereotypes is damaging our sense of well-being and leading to increasing unhappiness, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and eating disorders in women, particularly amongst young people and children – and men. We believe that everyone has the right, whatever their size, shape or form, to feel happy about themselves.”

I discussed with Jo the problems concerning the games industry – such as the low number of women employed, representation of female characters and the general notion of games as a male hobby. She gave me some great advice, and told me to keep fighting for my cause. I found Jo Swinston to be a very inspiring person, especially as she told me about working in a male-dominated workplace, something I may have to face in future.
